A unique stop if you're visiting Hocking Hills in Southeast Ohio. Ravenwood Castle is a bed and breakfast with an affable staff. The Castle sits atop a forested hill in what is otherwise farm country. The castle itself includes a handful of rooms off a main dining hall where breakfast and dinner are served regularly. Please keep in mind that dinner does require a reservation and that you should inform the staff of dietary constraints prior to your visit. The Castle also includes a bar, a library, and a wide selection of games. If you're a gamer, this is probably a must-see. Guests to Ravenwood can also stay in one of the adjacent cottages. My visit included a stay to the Spinster's Cottage. I thought the name was a bit misleading because this was the perfect place for a couple with an upstairs loft-style bedroom, a kitchen and living area and a bathroom with a large two person jacuzzi. Though I definitely enjoyed my stay, I thought it was odd to market this place as a bed and breakfast as the facilities are way too much for a single couple to run themselves. This place definitely requires a staff to handle all the different rooms and services that are provided, much more like a hotel than a B&B. There are also some details that could be improved upon. For instance, if you're looking for a straight B&B, this is more hotel-esque; if you're looking for an authentic castle or an authentic cottage in the woods, this is a little more ren-fair; and if you're looking for a wide selection of food, well, this is a little more you get what's been made (although most of the food was quite good). All-in-all it's a great experience that I'm glad I had, however, I'd probably mix up where I stayed the next time I'm in the area.

I was debating over what to give Ravenwood. It was a toss up between 2 and 3. But I just couldn't give it 3 stars. I have experienced better at a MUCH better price. The reason I came to Ravenwood was for a Murder Mystery, which WAS amazing. But the actual stay at Ravenwood was not so much. Don't get me wrong, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Cinderella's Coach House where I stayed, was very comfortable, and clean. The Coach House has a large jacuzzi style bath tub, which I attempted to enjoy. Attempted, because when it was about halfway filled, the hot water ran out. We tried again the next day, and the same thing. So never really got to relax in it, or make actual use of it. Grounds are well maintained, and there are lots and lots of games to play. The geek in you will be overjoyed! This is the place to go if you want to spend the day playing board games and taking a hike. Dinner is $25 per person, buffet style. For $25 I expect better quality than what was offered. Dinner rolls, very simple salad items (mixed greens, sliced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese (Kraft style), and some other veggie)- 2 kinds of dressing, fruit selection (pineapple, watermelon, strawberries), 2 entree dishes, starch of some kind or two, and two kinds of desserts. I know, you must be thinking, but that's not so bad. Choices and all you can eat! It's the quality of the food that I have a problem with. For how much you pay, the quality is just not there. Desserts are definitely sub-par, and the food is just okay. I would suggest skipping dinner there if you can. Breakfast is also disappointing. All carbs and no actual protein offered (eggs/bacon/sausage). You can special order eggs and sausage, but that's special ordering. Casseroles are okay (pancake and sausage or corned beef hash). Not the best, not the worst. And the cinnamon rolls on Sunday are good, and are indeed homemade. Will I stay here again? If it's for a Murder Mystery, maybe. I would definitely come for the day and enjoy the games and company. But for the price you pay, I don't think it is worth it.

My husband and I had a wonderful weekend at the Woodcutter's Cottage at the Ravenwood Castle. I would strongly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun getaway. The cottage was spacious, clean and had fun decor to go along with the theme. Although it was cold outside, the cottage was warm and cozy and even had a fireplace. We spent time in the castle playing games in the Pub and enjoying the fabulous breakfasts. We did not have dinner in the castle but will take advantage of that next visit. The staff was attentive and fun, and they have a huge variety of games to play along with a library of books and DVDs.

Absolutely the BEST get away in Ohio for a weekend! My wife surprised me with a trip here for our anniversary and it was the most fun, yet relaxing weekend we've had in a long time. If you like an escape from the hustle and bustle of day to day business in the city and have a fondness for the outdoors and board games, this is for you. The castle steward and his family are really fun, kind people that take pride in this business and it shows. Explore the surrounding parks and amazing restaurants during the day and head into the pub at night for a bottle of wine and card or board games... they have an abundance of both! A must visit for anyone who needs a relaxing, serene departure from the daily :) We will be back. Thanks Steve and crew

I've stayed at Ravenwood castle twice in the past year - the first time was for a convention (which I organized), the second was just for fun - and both weekends were incredible. Ravenwood is truly in the middle of nowhere - there is little to no cell phone service, and no wi-fi/internet available on property, either. Both of these things are important to note, but honestly being unplugged is one of the things I love most about this place :) Jim (the proprietor) and Steve (the manager) are friendly and welcoming. They have a good beer selection in the bar, including a decent number of local brews. Breakfast is included, and while it's more of the 'continental' variety, it's tasty - coffee/juice/water/milk, a couple different cold cereals, some muffins, a hot casserole (these can be hit-or-miss, honestly), and on Sundays, delicious cinnamon rolls. The property is clean, beautiful, and quiet. 'Picturesque' is a more than proper descriptor :) On my first trip I stayed in the Spinster cottage right next to the castle. Very roomy, big bathroom, and the queen bed upstairs is supremely comfortable. On my second trip, my friends and I booked a bit late and ended up down in the Fairy Tale cabins. While we still had an amazing time, I'd only 'choose' a Fairy Tale cabin if it was - again - the only option available to me. They're definitely a bargain for the price, but our cabin (Sleeping Beauty, I think?) had a tiny bathroom (which meant a tiny shower - not suggested for tall people, that's for sure) and the bed was kind of set in a nook, causing us to hit our heads on the wall several times throughout our stay. Also, it's not exactly an easy walk to or from the castle - it's a pretty steep uphill climb to get there, and a bit of a perilous downhill trek to come back. We drove all but once :-/ (And mind you, I'm a healthy, active, outdoorsy person...) As someone who organized an event that took place here (we rented out the entire property for it), I have to say that Ravenwood is simply a pleasure to work with. There were some minor communication issues here and there, but nothing more than what is to be expected and certainly nothing extremely problematic. Their rental rates and agreements are also pretty affordable. Needless to say, I see myself returning to Ravenwood many times in the future - both for fun, and for another go at my event next year :)

Super fun. Stayed in the dungeon. Cool looking room. Comfy bed. We utilized the board game offering - it was awesome and we ended up buying one later(they didn't sell that particular one there). Karington(sp?),the caretaker/barkeep/gamekeeper/concierge/short order cook was helpful and really fun to chat with as he is goldmine of board game info. Food was good as far as bar food goes. Only suggestion to the staff - Get postcards on the shelf! I wanted to send some to our friends but didn't see any!

We were there recently to celebrate my wife's birthday. The place is amazing. It was built as a bed and breakfast from the beginning with 7 rooms in the castle and several cabins around the grounds. Currently the castle is for sale so the amenities do seem a bit off. We did have dinner Thursday night when we arrived but there was no dinner available Friday or Saturday nights. Rooms were clean and nice. There are some antiques through out the building (some of the furnishings are out of place). Sadly the water at the castle is well water that has the unmistakable aroma of sulfur. There is no cell phone coverage, limited number of TV's and the internet is limited. You can actually unplug!!! This is probably the best feature! Overall it is a great experience and get away.

We stayed here one night midweek in early fall for a little getaway. I am happy we took our old SUV, the uphill drive to the castle wouldn't have been easy in my little sedan! When we arrived I was a little surprised at how close the cabins were to the main house, I had envisioned them being a drive down the road, but it was a two minute walk to the main castle. Admittedly, it was a bit weird walking into the castle. Being midweek while most people were at work/school the place was empty. We kinda stood there until someone came out of the office to help us check in. The woman who helped us was incredibly friendly and knew exactly which cabin we were in (Candle maker) when I gave her my name. The bed in the cabin was incredibly comfortable, and the sheets were super soft - I was afraid they would be cheap and scratchy! We spent a couple hours playing a long game of checkers while enjoying our fair share of adult beverages! (Which we were sure to bring ourselves, the beer prices at their pub are pretty pricey!) Like the other two reviews mention, there was no dinner provided when we were there either. However, we were prepared for this and since we were in a cabin we had our own little kitchenette. We simply sat outside on the (tiny) patio for our cabin and had our little microwaved dinners. I don't camp, so for me this was really great. I felt as though we got the outdoor experience all while having a whirlpool tub and a gas fireplace!

A few things you may want to know: They did NOT provide dinner when we were there. It was during their 'peak season' and they were completely booked. Luckily we called to ask what was on the menu to find out there was not going to be dinner! So we had to find food somewhere else in Hocking Hills, which can be very limited. We ended up going to a place called 'Grouse Nest' which was about 6 miles from Ravenwood (See Grouse Nest for my review). We saw other Ravenwood guests there as well, which we believe was because of the limited number of options. Their breakfast consisted of fruit, granola, cheerios, muffins, OJ, milk, and a breakfast casserole. The casserole one morning was a sausage and pancake casserole, and the next morning was a corn beef hash casserole. We wanted to check out the 'bar.' We rang the doorbell of the castle (as we were not staying in the castle) during the bar hours. When we asked if we could get a couple beers, the lady sounded a bit surprised by our request and that made us feel a bit awkward. We were the only people at the bar. We had to order how many beers we wanted for the night because the lady was leaving. Unfortunately, we did not get to experience the grounds as we wanted because it was terribly cold and rainy the days we were there. They do have hiking trails on the grounds. The Fairytale cabins are a hike from the castle. We never walked because it was approximately 3/4-1 mile and it was a hike up a hill. Had it not been raining, we could've walked it but we usually went to the castle for breakfast which was pretty early and we were on a schedule. I'd say if the weather was nice, this place wouldn't be a bad place. We had a cheaper room so it was fine; however, the castle rooms were way out of our price range for that type of experience. Especially since it's a 2 night minimum for weekends. Our room was a bit tacky, but we spent most of our time on the Hocking Hills hiking trails. It is better than camping in the cold, but if it were warmer I think I'd prefer camping for $9 a night as opposed to $90 a night for this experience. If you have kids at OU and have a hard time finding a hotel room and you don't mind the drive, I would recommend the cheaper rooms for night stays.

Ravenwood Castle is not a hotel. Nor is it, alas, an authentic castle. However it is a quaint, themed bed and breakfast tucked well off the beaten path in Hocking Hills. My wife and I stayed here for three nights during the week (not the weekend), so I can't comment on how things are run during the busier days. We found the staff to be personable and helpful. The breakfast each morning was very good, and it seemed as if the kitchen staff would try to accommodate you if what was being served didn't meet your dietary needs. The menu for the pub was very limited, but what they did serve was tasty (my favorite being the cheddar and beer soup). And for a bed and breakfast, they had an ample range of craft beers available. As for our room, wow. Wow in a good way. We stayed in the Shakespeare suite. The bed was big and comfy. The bathroom featured a spacious tub. Yet our favorite part of the room was the sitting area off to the side, which consisted of a table, a settee, and two matching chairs. It was the perfect cozy spot for my wife and I to read and play board games. Speaking of board games, the main office was stocked with a large library of games featuring such greats as Arkham Horror and Sentinels of the Multiverse. We were also surprised to find that the library downstairs contained the full line of Pathfinder books. Now, if those last two sentences made sense to you, then this is the bed and breakfast place for you, because there aren't a whole lot of other activities on the grounds. Cellular service ceases to be an obtainable thing in the castle. My wife and I found this to be a plus, but for some it may be a problem. With as wonderful a time as we had, I cannot give Ravenwood five stars. When I booked our room, the description indicated it had a deck attached to it. I envisioned a quiet outdoor nook where my wife and I could chat in private. The reality was that the "deck" barely fit two chairs and emptied out onto the main path from the kitchen's back door to the over-sized, outdoor chess set and the cottages. There was no privacy to be had there. Also, the wooden railings were infested with creepy crawleys. I understand that we were in the middle of a forest and we should expect wildlife from all the different fauna. Yet those railings were housing a colony of something that was off-putting enough for my wife and me to give up on spending more time on the "deck". Also, if you stay in the Shakespeare room, be advised that the entrance to the room is right next to the stairs which lead down to the pub. When the pub is hopping, you will know it. All in all, our stay at Ravenwood relaxed and renewed us. Despite the few shortcomings we experienced, the quiet moments where we were unplugged and surrounded by castle's beauty more than made up for it. We hope to go back again someday.
